New York, NY—Thousands of global and youth climate activists rallied and marched through New York City today, calling on world leaders to tear down the pillars of fossil fuels, shortly before the beginning of the United Nations’ General Assembly and the concurrent “Climate Week NYC."  With a massive banner and twelve-foot pillars they broadcasted their demands to make polluters pay and end fossil fuels. This visually breathtaking action kicks off a global week of climate strikes all over the world, led by the organization Fridays for Future.

Speakers at the rally included Roishetta Ozane, Kamea Ozane, Mahogany Sibley–frontline leaders from the Global South; Emily Gallagher–Queens Assembly Member; Liv Senghor–Planet Over Profit; Hilda Nakabuye–Fridays For Future Uganda; and more. The activists marched over the Brooklyn Bridge promenade carrying 12' tall banners representing the pillars of the fossil fuel economy and youth demands, home made art, and more. Their demands include: Polluters: Stop polluting the Gulf South. Funders: Stop funding fossil fuels. Leaders: Gov. Hochul sign the Superfund Act.

Climate Week NYC is a week of action and events from business leaders, activists, and heads of government from around the world. The theme this year is “It’s Time.” With messages to phase out fossil fuels, invest in clean energy, embed climate action into national government policies, and allow developing countries more access to climate finance, there will be global attention on the United Nations General Assembly meeting running at the same time. This youth protest will lift up the demands most urgently requested from activists facing climate chaos around the world.

This event is part of a global week of action, with hundreds of events around the globe. More information about the Global Climate Strike can be found here.
