Baku, Azerbaijan—With two short days remaining in the United Nations’ COP29 climate conference, activists will carry out two unmissable actions inside the conference space highlighting concerns around climate pledges and making polluters pay.

First, at 8:30 AM local time, they will shine a light on the lack of ambition surrounding countries’ climate pledges by showcasing a giant “MISSING AMBITION” poster around the conference venue - displaying a cute cat named Ambition that only responds to 1.5°C. The reward for finding ambition: climate justice.

Then at 1:00 PM, huge crowds of delegates will take part in a live ‘game show’ with ‘oil and gas executives’ showing how polluters can pay: no more bad excuses.

8:30 AM: Activists Plaster COP29 with Calls to Find Missing Climate Ambition

WHERE: Zone B, Action location 2

WHEN: Thursday, 21 November 8:30 AM Baku time

  • Gigantic ‘MISSING AMBITION’ poster, offering a reward: climate justice (mockup available by request)

  • Several smaller posters handed out to delegates

WHY: The action calls attention to Nationally Determined Contributions, which are pledges that individual countries make to reduce their Greenhouse Gas Emissions. Nations are required to update their NDCs by early 2025. Yet so far, it’s not been a big topic at COP29. Current NDCs are aligned with a planetary temperature increase of 2.7°C above pre-industrial levels, blowing the Paris climate target of 1.5C out of the water. Global north countries must step up and commit to strong and ambitious mitigation targets.

1:00 PM: Make Polluters Pay

WHERE: Inside the Blue Zone, zone C, action location 4

WHEN: Thursday, 21 November 1:00 PM Baku time

VISUALS:

  • Gigantic ‘PAY UP’ and ‘MAKE POLLUTERS PAY’ banners and signs

  • Gigantic ‘LOSS & DAMAGE FINANCE NOW’ banner

  • ‘Fossil fuel profits’ money bag and ‘Loss & Damage Fund’ bucket

  • Giant ‘scale of justice’

  • ‘Game show contestants’ shoveling money into the Loss & Damage Fund

  • Dancing, singing, and throwing ‘make polluters pay’ money

WHY: With just hours left of the negotiations, activists will occupy the conference space with a show that cannot be ignored. Activists will run an eye-catching show, including an interactive game where delegates are invited to shovel money from fossil fuel profits to the Loss & Damage Fund to help balance the literal ‘scales of climate justice’. Through performance, songs and chants, the message that money is not scarce but abundant, particularly by making the polluters pay up for their damages, will come loud and clear.
